Ice Out on Highland Lake

It's official, the ice is out on Highland Lake in Bridgton. High winds broke up the last remaining sheets of ice and whipped up whitecaps that looked more like ocean waters than a lake. Fishing season is just around the corner and there were even some brave rowers out on the lake yesterday morning when the waters were calm.
Flowers are blooming in the gardens and there's lots of planting and gardening to do in the next few weeks. The ducks and geese are returning and songbirds are chirping happily announcing the return of warm weather. I'm already dreaming of the warm summer days ahead and lazy afternoons on the beach.

Spring Is Just Around the Corner
Dare I even say it - Spring is just around the corner. February was a bit of a disappointment for folks who love snow, but there's always next winter. Now I'm looking ahead to warmer weather, some lawn and garden tidying-up and thinking about what to plant. The snow is melting fast now and even when it does snow, it disappears in a day or two. I'm keeping an eye on the lake thinking the ice will go out early this year. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we have a mild "mud season", because let's face it, nobody likes mud.
I've had my memories of last summer to sustain me through the long winter and now I'm getting eager for the nice weather and welcoming the tourists to town. It always seems so festive in the summer when there's so much to do and people are outside enjoying the beaches, hiking, biking and picnics.

Late Winter Snow Storm

Waking up to a scene like this reminds me that winter can be incredibly beautiful. This winter has been a strange one as here in the western foothills we have missed most of the snowstorms that have hugged the coastline. But this week we've been getting some late winter snow that is heavy and wet and sticks to the trees to create classic winter scenery. No doubt snowmobilers will get out and enjoy the new snow. Have fun and be safe.

More Snow and A Great Weekend Ahead

We've had about 10 inches of new snow this week and that's great news for Mushers Bowl in Bridgton this weekend Jan 22-24, 2010. In addition the weatherman is predicting stellar winter weather for the weekend - with moderate temps and lots of sunshine. So come on up to Bridgton and have a great time.
In addition to the Mushers Bowl events there is plenty of new snow for snowmobilers to enjoy and of course skiers will want to check out the slopes at Shawnee Peak.
Don't miss this wonderful winter weekend in Maine's Western Mountains with lots to do fir the whole family.

Perfect November
It looks like I've neglected posting to thsi blog for a long time. But today is truly worthy of a few words. The temperatures are hovering around 60 degrees, the sky is blue, the fish are jumping and I watched a bald eagle fly down the length of the lake. Not bad for November. The dogs had a great romp on the grounds and are particularly interested in routing out the poor little chipmunks.
Summer 2009 was a disappointment but fall has been quite mild and enjoyable.
